How can you sleep at night?

My name is Rich Bobbe and I am a criminal defense attorney. I haven't always done this work. After graduating from law school I served as an Assistant District Attorney in Philadelphia. While working my way up to the Major Trials division of the office, I learned a tremendous amount and met some of the better people I have ever known.

It is usually those friends, and often people who do not practice law, who ask me how I can sleep at night. How can I sleep when I defend people accused of the worst crimes people can commit against one another? How can I sleep when I know my client "did it?" My friend Mike has the funniest answer to that question but my answer is simple. Whether a prosecutor or a defense attorney, we are part of the best criminal justice system ever devised. Each has a responsibility to do their best and when we do, we hope for a just result.

Now, am I saying there are no problems in our system? Absolutely not. The problems facing us are myriad and I hope to use this blog to begin discussing and debating them. I also plan on sharing some of my experiences and observations.
